A re-elected Coalition Government will deliver two new Green Army projects for Ringwood North and Mitcham.
The Green Army provides opportunities for young Australians aged 17-24 years to gain training and experience which will assist them in the future to find jobs, while generating real benefits for the local environment.
The projects, to be completed over two stages, will:
- Rejuvenate areas around Mullum Mullum Creek – a significant local waterway that impacts the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay – by enhancing riparian and local indigenous vegetation.
- Improve local waterways, protect local threatened ecological communities and provide habitat along this important wildlife corridor
- Protect riverbanks and restore natural habitat areas through the removal of environmental weeds and invasive species and replacing with native species
The projects will include works at Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve, Antonio Park, Schwerkolt Cottage, Loughies Bushland and BJ Hubbard Reserve.
“These projects will help to ensure that Deakin’s local areas and environment are protected and threatened species’ habitats are strengthened,” Mr Sukkar said.
“The Green Army teams will work in partnership with local community groups to deliver the projects.”
The Green Army has been a huge success with 1145 projects announced nationally and more than 700 projects already rolled out in urban, rural and remote areas.
In Deakin, three Green Army projects have already been rolled-out at Blackburn Lake Sanctuary, Heatherdale Creek Parklands, and Eastfield Reserve, with 114 projects either completed or underway across Victoria.
The Green Army is a hands-on, practical environmental action programme that supports local communities to undertake environment and heritage conservation projects across Australia while offering participants valuable skills and practical experience.
“We will work with local government, local residents and community groups in the design of the projects,” Minister Hunt said.
“Michael Sukkar is a great local member who regularly talks to me about the environmental needs of his local community. He should be congratulated for advocating for these projects so strongly.”
The Green Army programme not only benefits the environment, but also provides participants with skills and experience which will support them in finding jobs or further education.
