Budget 2015: Boost to Deakin through National Stronger Regions Fund

The Commonwealth Government has announced that $3 million will be provided, through the Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund, to construct a new Centre for Regional Knowledge and Innovation in Ringwood.

Federal Member for Deakin, Michael Sukkar said the project involves the construction of a new library, learning and cultural centre in the Ringwood Town Square precinct.

“The Centre for Regional Knowledge and Innovation will also provide local small businesses and entrepreneurs with support in growing their businesses and creating local jobs,” said Michael.

The project, a partnership between Maroondah City Council, the Queensland Investment Corporation (the owner of Eastland Shopping Centre) and the Federal Member for Deakin, highlights how the private sector and different levels of government can work together.

“I am pleased to partner with the Maroondah City Council and QIC to deliver a project which will help our local small businesses and entrepreneurs, as well provide enhanced learning opportunities through a new library,” said Michael.

The National Stronger Regions Fund will deliver $1 billion over five years to enhance economic growth and sustain regions into the future.

The Government has been exceptionally pleased with the amount of interest in the Fund, with 405 applications received in Round One, seeking funding of over $1.2 billion.

After a competitive merit-based selection process the Government funding has been approved for 51 local projects around the nation.

“We are committed to strengthening regions across Australia by investing in projects to build or upgrade vital infrastructure,” Mr Sukkar said.

“The investments announced today focus on strengthening communities in Deakin, by improving economic growth, boosting productivity and creating employment opportunities.”
