Green Army makes a difference at Heatherdale Creek

Young people involved in the Heatherdale Creek Green Army team are seeing the results of their hard work come to fruition after completing their on-ground project.

Speaking at the graduation of the Green Army participants, who have spent the last six months repairing, replanting, and revitalising the riparian creek corridor, Michael Sukkar, Federal Member for Deakin, thanked those young people for their hard work.

“The Heatherdale Creek has seen significant benefits from this project. Around four tonnes of introduced noxious weeds have been removed, and around 6,500 native and indigenous plants have been planted to help revitalise the creek’s ecosystem,” Michael said.

“Through their dedication and teamwork, the Green Army participants have made an invaluable contribution to the health and vitality of this important community asset.

“It’s uplifting to get overwhelming positive feedback from local residents who notice the dramatic change and improvement to the Heatherdale Creek Parklands and its surrounds.

“What is equally heartening is the feedback I’m getting on the Green Army participants, who have charmed their way into the hearts of locals with their kind and warm manner,” Michael said.

“These participants have not only generated real environment and conservation benefits for our community, but they have gained valuable practical training and experience to help them prepare for the workforce, pursue further training or improve their career opportunities.”

This is the third successful Green Army project in the Deakin electorate, with other completed projects at Blackburn Lake Sanctuary and Eastfield Reserve.
