Michael Sukkar, Federal Member for Deakin, is urging eligible local sporting champions aged between 12 to 18 years to apply for Local Sporting Champions grants to assist with the cost of competing in approved sporting competitions.
“Supporting local young athletes to realise their potential is incredibly important. Sometimes the cost of travelling, accommodation, uniforms or equipment can be the difference between going to the state or national championships or not,” said Michael.
“No young person should be held back from being given the best opportunity to pursue their dreams and reaching their potential, that is why these grants are so important.”
In just the last two rounds, twenty-one young local Deakin athletes have received $500, through the Commonwealth Government’s Local Sporting Champions programme, to participate in national and international sporting competitions like the School Sport Australia championships and the Pacific School Games.
“There are fifteen remaining grants available to young local Deakin sporting champions in this final round for 2015-16. I encourage all local parents, coaches, and teachers to submit an application.”
