Young athletes from throughout Deakin have been recognised in Round 1 of the Local Sporting Champions program for 2014-15.
Michael Sukkar said he was delighted the Australian Government could support young people to pursue their sporting dreams, including cross-country runner David Friend (pictured).
“It can be expensive for young people and their families to meet the ongoing and significant costs associated with participating in sporting competitions,” Mr Sukkar said.
“This program is an excellent initiative designed to help take the pressure off families and support young people to be fit and active and to achieve at high levels in their chosen sport.”
The program provides financial assistance for young people, aged 12 to 18 years, who are competing, coaching or officiating at state, national or international sporting championships or School Sport Australia state or national championships.
Grants of $500 are available through the program to assist with the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing.
A new round of grant applications opened on 1 July 2014 and will close on 31 October 2014.
